"An enormous bird, almost certainly the great grey owl that had hooted overhead the other evening, glinted above me in the firelight for a moment. The feeling that it had a message or hint for me grew still stronger.

When I looked down there was nothing but darkness, but up above me was a whole glittering universe. I thought about the heat and cold of those worlds of light and darkness, and of the radiation that puts an end to everything.

I thought about the Earth, protected by the atmosphere that we breathe, our home star, on the shadowy side of which the owls and a man who had lost his enjoyment in life were going about their business on a ridge thrust out into a bog."
