In 1920, dissatisfied with the challenges of high school, Adolph Gottlieb enrolled in evening classes at the Art students League of New York, where he made friends with a group of like-minded artists - including Mark Rothko, Milton Avery and Chaim Gross - and from where he started to shape his unique visual character. Over the next four decades, Gottlieb would go on to gain both critical and popular acclaim and, in the process, become one of America's foremost contemporary artist, and a founder - along with his good friends Mark Rothko, Louis Schanker and others - of the American Abstract Expressionist movement.
