English summary: In the decades around 1800, the German middle-class was sometimes as engaged with the landscapes of Italy as they were with those of their own homeland. As ideal enclaves in the territory of an as-yet open cultural nation, the landscapes were part of the German identity and a central theme of paintings, literature, and journalism. Concrete travel experiences stood alongside the no less influential presentations to those who had never seen Italy. Thus, the subsequent archive, consisting of a considerable number of texts and images, is a history of collective perceptions and projections, whose fragments and changes are presented here for the first time from the Age of Enlightenment to the foundations of the German Empire in 1870. Whether it was viewed as an archaic paradise for wondering artists, as a haven from modernity, or as a substitute for Greece, "Italy" was always a construction made on the basis of cultural, artistic, or literary paradigms and representations. The appreciation of Italy as a central theme of German art and literature of the 18th and 19th centuries is systematically investigated for the first time in the work, which looks back over a broad period of time. Themes, questions, and materials from art history, literary history, and cultural history are brought together in this work to offer a comprehensive perspective about the landscapes of Italy from the German perspectives of the 18th and 19th centuries. German description: Die Beschaftigung mit den Landschaften Italiens gehorte im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert zur kulturellen Identitat des deutschen Burgertums - eine an Bruchen, Widerspruchen, Illusionen und Enttauschungen reiche Geschichte, die hier erstmals uber einen groaen Zeitraum hinweg kritisch nachgezeichnet wird. Die Landschaften Italiens haben das deutsche Burgertum in den Jahrzehnten um 1800 mitunter intensiver beschaftigt als die der eigenen Heimat. Als ideelle Exklaven einer in ihrem Territorium noch offenen Kulturnation wurden sie Teil deutscher Identitat und zum zentralen Thema von Malerei, Literatur und Publizistik. Konkrete Reiseerlebnisse stehen dabei neben den nicht weniger einflussreichen Vorstellungen derer, die Italien nie gesehen hatten. Das so entstandene gewaltige Archiv an Texten und Bildern ist auch eine Geschichte kollektiver Wahrnehmungen und Projektionen, deren Bruche und Veranderung von der Aufklarung bis zur Reichgrundung 1870 hier erstmals systematisch untersucht werden. Ob als archaisches Paradies wandernder Kunstler, als Fluchtort vor der Moderne oder als Griechenland-Ersatz - "Italien" ist immer Konstruktion, ausgehend von kulturellen, kunstlerischen oder literarischen Paradigmen und Vorstellungen. Mit der Wahrnehmung Italiens wird ein zentrales Thema der deutschen Kunst und Literatur des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts erstmals uber einen langen Zeitraum hinweg systematisch untersucht. Themen, Fragestellungen und Materialien der Kunstgeschichte, Literaturgeschichte und Kulturgeschichte werden in umfassender Perspektive zusammengefuhrt.
