It was only in the 1920's that the first isolated hormones and vitamins were combined, indicating that even in the smallest amounts they could reverse states of deficiency and certain enzymes were observed with the ability to accelerate chemical processes related to metabolism. The Braunschweig historian of science, Heiko Stoff, shows in his study that the scientifically developed, state funded and industrially produced active agents created a new physiology of efficient bodies and at the same time functioned as a preventative and optimizing drug. Especially under the Nazis, active agents held a central function in improved efficiency and the ethno-political regulations of the "racial body." Wahrend die erst in den 1920er Jahren isolierten Hormone und Vitamine vereinte, dass sie selbst in kleinster Menge Mangelzustande aufhoben, verwiesen Enzyme auf die Fahigkeit, stoffwechselchemische Prozesse zu beschleunigen. Wirkstoffe, das waren unsichtbare, fuer das Funktionieren des Organismus jedoch unerlassliche chemische Agentien.Der Braunschweiger Wissenschaftshistoriker Heiko Stoff zeigt in seiner Studie, dass die wissenschaftlich erarbeiteten, staatlich geforderten und industriell produzierten Wirkstoffe eine neue Physiologie des leistungsstarken Korpers begruendeten und zugleich als praventive und optimierende Arzneimittel funktionierten. Insbesondere im Nationalsozialismus kam den Wirkstoffen eine zentrale Funktion bei der Leistungssteigerung und bevolkerungspolitischen Regulierung des Volkskorpers zu. Gerade die Kompetenz der Wirkstoffe, in Experiment und Klinik erstaunliche Leistungen zu vollbringen, machte diese zugleich verdachtig, unerwuenschte Reaktionen hervorzurufen.
