The question is taken up by the author from mutually complementary perspectives, so that an answer can emerge from the coherence of these perspectives. The spectrum incorporates an engagement with the modernity of art. Gunter Figal explores the interpretations, or the history of arts reception, from which the modern understanding of art is derived or articulated. Finally, the cognitive character of art is discussed, particularly in how it engages with perceptibility and comprehensibility. Frigal liberates the exemplary human way of representing from its Aristotelian association of purpose-driven-action, in order to connect it with the understanding of indirectly consistent appearances derived from Kant. In this way, he unites a more anthropological understanding of art with that of aesthetics and consequently also incorporates East Asian examples into his consideration.
