Julian's imperial position and biography have always attracted considerable attention to his oft articulated religious thoughts, making Julian a key figure for the understanding of the religious culture of late antiquity. Based on a systematic analysis of Julian's works, Sara Stocklin-Kaldewey examines the ideas that form the basis of the emperor's piety and discusses their consistency, motivation and consequences. In doing this, she reveals recurring motifs and problems, and uses these to locate her subject on the spiritual map of late antiquity. In many cases they prove to be representative of the religious discourse of the time and of the major questions debated by Christian thinkers, philosophers and members of the educated pagan elite.
