With the exception of Buddenbrooks, money has only occasionally aroused the interest of scholars as a subject of study in the novels of Thomas Mann. Using contemporary monetary theory as a background, the present study undertakes a close textual analysis to trace the meaning of money and awareness of money in the deep structure of Mann s works.
