Constantin Brancusi was one of the most influential sculptors of the twentieth century, his work being pivotal in the development of modern art. While the significance and innovative quality of his art has been recognized at a formal level, scholarship has yet to acknowledge that such formal innovation was at the service of Brancusi's spiritual concerns. This present work aims to provide the elements of folkloric and Orthodox religious background necessary to understand the true nature of what is deemed simply a 'formal' element of Brancsi's work. By examining fairy tales important to Brancusi, his participation and thoughts on Romanian Orthodox practice, and his photography, the reader will come to grasp that Brancusi's true innovation was his dedication to the embodiment in form of the essence of the divine immanent in the world.
