"The Female Quixote", first published in 1752, depicts a heroine, Arabella, who has been raised by her family in complete seclusion. As a result, she has resorted to reading romantic literature to escape the emptiness of her life, but has become caught up in a fantasy world, where knights in shining armour really do rescue beautiful princesses from dragons. With her typical wry wit and craft, Charlotte Lennox parodies the sentimental novel and writers such as Miguel de Cervantes ("The Female Quixote" is an inversion of his "Don Quixote de la Mancha"). In this intentionally anti-romantic novel, Lennox addressed the problem of letting the imagination overpower reality. Praised by Samuel Richardson, Samuel Johnson and Henry Fielding, "The Female Quixote" was popular throughout the nineteenth century and was translated into French, German and Spanish.
