Agriculture and its origins have long been lively and innovative subjects of research, involving people working in a variety of disciplines; indeeed the complexity of agricultural processes and their organisation within particular communities and societies requires a broad analytical scale on which to investigate them. This volume is the outcome of a collaborative research programme combining archaeologists, archaeobotanists, ethnographers, historians and agronomists, based around experiments in archaeology and aimed at establishing new common ground for integrating different approaches, viewing agriculture from the standpoint of the human actors involved. Each article provides a synthetic, interdisciplinary overview of various aspects of the relationship between people and plants across wide ranging and diverse spatial and temporal milieu, including such considerations as crop diversity through time, the use of wild foodstuffs, social context, status and choices of food plants. This is the first of three volumes in the EARTH series on the developmental history of world agriculture.
