The subjects of transport and information systems have long been closely linked because they are both complements and substitutes for each other and thus offer potential for more efficient and productive traffic demand management. This collection examines the substitution and complementarity hypotheses as well as the impact of new information technology on transport and the increasing adoption of information technology in transportation systems. The volume is organized into five sections. Part I offers a history and overview of the subject, while Part II examines the welfare implications of information provision for traffic demand management. Part III discusses the network analysis of intelligent transportation systems and Part IV investigates the spatial impacts of information technology and telecommuting. Finally, Part V looks in detail at case studies.
