People rely on implicit interaction in their everyday interactions with one another to exchange queries, offers, responses, and feedback without explicit communication. A look with the eyes, a wave of the hand, the lift of the door handle--small moves can do a lot to enable joint action with elegance and economy. This lecture outlines a theory and method for analyzing implicit interactions so that they may be better understood and employed by interaction designers. The Implicit Interaction Framework posits that by analyzing everyday implicit interactions for patterns and tactics, designers of interactive devices can better understand how to design interactions that are easily understood and taken up by even casual users. This lecture looks at the burgeoning array of interactive devices that are currently coming onto the market, and characterizes classic pitfalls that stymie good interaction. It then introduces the Implicit Interaction Framework, and, by way of several vignettes, illustrates how to analyze everyday human interactions in order to create interaction analogues for human-device interaction. Finally, it outlines special considerations that need to be taken into account in prototyping and validating devices that employ implicit interactions.
