Cerebral revascularization refers to a set of techniques employed to manage the potential onset and condition of stroke (brain ischemia), the purpose of which is to bring more blood flow to areas affected by brain ischemia. Ischemia is a condition where the flow of oxygen-rich blood to a part of the body is restricted and can result in damage or dysfunction to brain tissue (stroke). Revascularization may be performed as a "therapeutic" procedure for emergent cases, or as a "preventive" measure on a more elective basis. There are three major categories: 1. Carotid Endarterectomy, 2. Extracranial-Intracranial (ECIC) Bypass, 3. Endovascular. This book focuses on the latter two categories, since much is already published on carotid endarterectomy, and covers the spectrum of various forms of open and endovascular revascularization surgery, as well as a section devoted to perioperative critical care. (Note that we do have one strong chapter on carotid endarterectomy so as not to have a complete hole).
