During the Second World War, women pilots were given the opportunity to fly military aircraft for the first time in history. In the USA, the celebrated aviatrix Jacqueline Cochran formed the Women Airforce Pilots (WASP) programme, where over one thousand women flyers ferried aircraft from factories to airbases from 1942 to 1944. Thirty eight American women pilots gave their lives in service of their country...In the Soviet Union, Marina Raskova (Russia's 'Amelia Earhart') formed the USSR's first all-female aviation regiments that flew combat missions along the Eastern Front. More than one thousand Russian women flew a combined total of more than 30,000 combat sorties, producing at least thirty Heroes of the Soviet Union. Over 50 Soviet women pilots were killed in action.
