A psychologist has discovered what thousands of doctors have tried but failed to do: an effective way to eliminate the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) without the use of drugs. Each year 3.5 million people end up in the doctor's office looking for relief from the painful and uncomfortable symptoms of IBS - a condition so named when every possible digestive disorder has been ruled out as the cause. Approximately one in five people in the United States suffer in silence from the condition, seeing doctor after doctor, and trying one medicine or remedy after another, looking for a cure. It turns out they've been looking for a solution from the wrong kind of doctor.Nearly two decades ago, Jeffrey M. Lackner, Psy.D., started counselling patients trying to cope with the stress of living with IBS. An unexpected thing happened: His patients reported that they were having more success quelling their symptoms through his stress-reduction programme than they were through drugs or other medical methods they tried. This led Dr. Lackner and his colleagues to years of study looking for a link between the bowel and the brain.Five years ago Dr.Lackner was one of only a handful of scientists given a grant by the National Institutes of Health to conduct research seeking a cure for IBS. The results of his research, scheduled to be released prior to the book's publication, have far exceeded his most optimistic projections. The book offers everyone with IBS the same step-by-step programme that Dr. Lackner continues to use every day to help patients reduce or even eliminate their symptoms.
