This work reviews the historical role of theory in psychoanalysis and explores the factors dividing cognitive science and psychoanalysis. Chartin g a path through Freud's ideas about the psyche, the volume points out the inconsistencies in his theories that have drawn psychoanalysis away from the scientific approach. Also reviewed is discourse on the metapsychology that has arisen since Freud's time.
