What is Bioeconomy? It is an economy that uses biological resources from the land and sea, as well as waste, as inputs to food and feed, industrial and energy production. It also covers the use of bio-based processes for sustainable industries. Bio-waste for example has considerable potential as an alternative to chemical fertilizers or for conversion into bio-energy, and can meet 2% of the EU renewable energy target. This book brings together a series of interviews on the bioeconomy with the main European players in the field. From Germany to Ireland, from Portugal to Denmark, Netherlands and Italy, the picture that emerges is of a ferment which invests the business world, universities and research centers, ready to face the challenges that this millennium just begun presents us: the increasing world population and its aging, with the resulting increase in global demand for food, climate change, the depletion of fossil resources and the better use of water resources.
