These five articles represent pioneering research in Nort American Social History, Immigration and Ethnic Studies and Women's Studies. Written by Varpu Lindström, the author of Defiant Sisters: A Social History of Finnish Immigrant Women in Canada, this selection includes the award winning article "I won't be a slave!", first published in 1986. Her articles, based on hundreds of interviews, give a human voice to hard-working immigrant women. Her writings have been characterized as offering "an engaging and thoughtful depiction of women who resisted so many of the conventions of gender, race and class when they came to Canada...
