Assistant Commissioner Sir Melville Macnaghten, having discovered that the murderer was a young barrister who drowned himself in the River Thames, went to elaborate lengths to both reveal and conceal his identity. Along with a famous writer, Macnaghten shared the solution with the public, yet altered the data just enough to protect the deceased suspect's respectable family.
