Born in Durham, England, J. E. H. MacDonald 18731932 emigrated to Canada in 1887 with his English mother and Canadian father. After studies at the Hamilton Art School and the Central Ontario School of Art and Design, he joined Lawren S. Harris and several other Canadian artists in what became known as the Group of Seven. These like-minded artists agreed that Canadas rugged wilderness needed to be recorded in a distinctive painting style, departing from European tradition.
