D-Day on June 6, 1944 still stands as the largest ever amphibious operation in history, as 150,000 Allied troops invaded Normandy and began the fight to Berlin. This book tells the story of those who lived and fought through this historic conflict. In first-person accounts of the Normandy landings, soldiers recreate the harrowing, world-changing drama of taking the beaches of France, dropping from the sky, wading out of landing craft, fighting to survive amidst the confusion and chaos. None of these tales have been told before, and show a wholly unique slice of combat history, with some taken from reports written by soldiers, and others being oral stories transcribed from a tape recorder. All are now stored in the Library of Congress as part of its oral history project.
