Philippe Desan, who introduces this fine translation, commends Friedrich's holistic interpretation of "Montaigne"'s unstructured creation, so often reduced by critics to its smallest fragments. Friedrich, says Desan, evokes 'an epoch, distilled from accounts given by the best witness of the Renaissance'.
