This work is an introductory textbook to the arguments about individual freedom. Nigel Warburton introduces and assesses the key arguments for and against individual freedom and toleration. Each chapter considers a fundamental argument about the scope of individual freedom, such as the concepts of negative and positive freedom; freedom of belief; the Harm Principle; and freedom of speech and expression. Each chapter is then clearly linked to a reading from a key thinker on these problems, including John Stuart Mill, Isaiah Berlin, Ronald Dworkin, and H.L.A. Hart.
