With the aim of helping people to keep healthy animals, this book covers a wide range of things that affect the health of livestock, from diarrhoea to rinderpest, and from traditional remedies to the use of modern medicine. The text also includes advice on care, feeding, and handling of animals. Emphasis is placed on preventing and controlling diseases and problems. The book covers routine treatments, assisting births and dealing with emergencies. Not only should it help readers realize what they can do to help their own animals, but should also help them recognize which problems need assistance from experienced vets or skilled workers. The book covers cattle, buffaloes, goats, sheep, pigs, horses, donkeys and camels. It also describes some important problems of dogs, rabbits and poultry.It is aimed at anyone who keeps animals, and for people who help advise or teach others who keep animals: the farmer who lives far from a vet - the book explains simply what can be done to prevent, recognize and treat many common sicknesses; the vet assistant or other skilled worker who advises others - medicines and treatments are explained and also warnings are given against any which are useless or dangerous; the teacher in a rural school - guidelines are given for teaching other people about animal health which should be useful in the teaching of agricultural science; and the NGO worker or agricultural extension worker who advises farmers on animal welfare.
