The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. In the numbering of the plates, XII and XVI are used twice; plate I] occurs twice, facing chapter I of both the French and English texts. With an engraved frontispiece, based on that of Burlington's 'Fabbriche antiche ..', 1730, and an engraved dedication to the Earl of Bute.
